The Scent of The Trail
Originally from London U.K., Martin J. Trout has been living in Italy since the nineties. He divides his time between the glamorous world of the global fragrance market and the more grittier and rougher world of the Outdoors.
An all round Adventurer: Martin is an accomplished ultra runner, mountaineer, ski mountaineering instructor and trail running coach at Endurance Training in Progress. He’s also a regular contributor to the leading Italian Trail Running Magazine: Spirito Trail.
A treasured addition to Italy on Trail, Martin brings us a wealth of experience.
With an extensive race bio that’s enabled him to experience the highs and lows of many of Italy’s top international trail running events, including top events such as the UTMB®, CCC®, The North Face® Lavaredo Ultra Trail, Sellaronda, Dolomiti di Brenta Trail, and Monte Rosa Walser Trail, and holding a Post Graduate degree in Sports Education, and a sound knowledge of mountains, Martin is a minefield of trail and sports facts!
Martin will be joining Italy on Trail’s founder, Maria Bellini in bringing readers an insiders angle to the trail culture in Italy. You can read our first interview with Martin here, and also Martin’s guide to Preparing for the Italian Trails.
”When we refer to trail culture, it’s not only about trail running, although with the growing number of Italian Trail Races, the possibilities of participating in some really cool events are endless,” explains Maria, who goes on to say: “It’s not only the big international events, but the smaller ones too, that offer a fabulous way to boost up some trail running activity during a holiday!”
“Here at Italy on Trail, we aim to provide an extensive trail race calendar, with a dedicated info page for each race, articles on trail running culture, yet also to promote awareness on the extensive network of trails and areas where runners and walkers can enjoy all that Italy has to offer for the outdoor walk/run enthusiast. Italy’s trails are there to be enjoyed, at which pace you decide to take to them, is your decision.”
Maria, originally from London, although half Italian and half Norwegian, has been living in Italy since the nineties, and like Martin, has extensive knowledge of the trail running scene, and admits to a penchant for some of the more obscure, underdog events, and areas of her adopted country.
A self confessed slow runner, she’s still on the lookout for a miracle that will make her go faster! Hopefully coach Martin will be able to intervene there!
It’s fair to say that in Italy, due to the diversity of the land, that the trails pose their fair share of questions for trail runners and walkers, whether you’ve got a bib pinned to your vest, and a cut off time to respect, or whether you’re going for a relaxing amble with friends. There can be plenty of challenges to overcome. It’s virtually impossible to not find hilly or mountainous areas, so hill walking is a skill to be acquired, then there’s altitude, and the sheer enormity of the mountain ranges. Just the visual impact can be emotionally charged due to the sheer beauty of the landscape.
So in the near future we’ll be hearing more from Martin, from articles related to training for the trails, general and Italy specific, to a broader view on trail culture and more.
