If you’re traveling to Italy this September, why not try one of these end of summer trail races?
September – What makes this a good month for an Italian trail race? Well, the heat will have eased off significantly. The holiday crowds will be less – in respect to July and August. Hotel and accommodation prices should be lower and flights more readily available. Check out our airport guide to see where you can fly to, in Italy.
There are many trail running events that make good ‘destination’ trail running races. We try to consider the following when presenting a selection:
- information available,
- race routes
- distances to choose from
- the ‘good event factor’
- offer of post race activities in vicinity
Bear in mind that not all Italian race websites have sections in English, so either resort to Google translate, or send an enquiry email to race directors.
Considering The Big Ones….
The Major Trail Fest that’s the UTMB® will be taking place in the last week of August.
It follows that in September, the contender for all of the media attention will be the epic Tor Des Geants®, this year incorporating the new, shorter distance “Tot Dret“.
So if you’re not one of the ‘lucky’ few to have been selected, and you still would like a taste of the Alps or of some BIG mountains… what’s going on?
Trail Del Parco Delle Alpi Marittime
Why not try the Trail Del Parco Delle Alpi Marittime in Piedmont. Far off the beaten track, the trip will be worth it when you’re faced with a spectacular trail route through the sumptuous Marittime Alps.
update: 4 September 2017 – unfortunately this years edition has been cancelled. We hope to see this fantastic trail race back in 2018!
Sellaronda Trail Running
More big mountains can be enjoyed in the Sellaronda Trail Running in Canazei, Trentino - South Tyrol, with a race route that takes you around the majestic Sella Massif, this is the one you want to be running for a taste of the Dolomites.
Mont Avic Trail
At the end of September, in Aosta is the Mont Avic Trail, taking place in the spectacular Mont Avic natural park, right in the beginning of the Aosta Valley, meaning it’s easy to get to, and a good choice for exploring the Alps.

Ultra Trail Dei Fieschi
Land Ahoy! If you are anywhere near Liguria, and the Cinque Terre, don’t miss the Ultra Trail dei Fieschi, for some challenging climbs, sea views, plus the chance for a dip in the aforementioned blu med should still be on the cards.
