The wonderfully named Salame Trail – Trail del Salame, takes place on 28th of May in the rural yet noble setting of Felino, Parma.
Now in its seventh year, this year’s event, looks set to be a smasher!
Where Does The Race Take Place?
The race route will take runners and walkers past the imposing Felino Castle and across hilly farmland. Although fairly runnable, it is relentless, with a constant up and down. Be prepared to push!
It’s called the Salame Trail, because Salame has been produced in this area for centuries, and today the “Salame di Felino” – the Salame that’s produced in this area – has it’s own protected status – and is considered by many to be one of the best Italian salamis.
What Can I Expect?
We caught up with Fabrizio Foglia of Atletica Casone Noceto Running Club, who when not running Ultra’s himself and musing about the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc – (you can read the UTMB article he wrote for Italyontrail.com HERE) is, along with Simone Azzolini, Trail del Salame co-Race Director.
We asked him what to expect in this 7th edition of the Trail del Salame. “This year we decided to change the race route, so that runners could have a choice of three distances.” Fabrizio told us. “We wanted to satisfy the needs of a wider spectrum of trail runners: those in search of a mid-long distance, those new to the trails and not to mention all those trail-sprinters out there who prefer the short, sharp, faster distances!”
What Makes It Special?
Whichever distance you choose, the 36km, 23km or 10km, all routes pass through fascinating Felino Castle. One of roughly 40 Castles that are scattered across the hills and plains in this area, which in historical times was known as the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. Read Italy on Trail’s guide to the Castles to discover more about these amazing spaces.
Felino Castle is also the setting for the Salame Museum. So if you want to learn more about one of Italy’s tastiest specialities this is the place to come. And here, right in the Castle’s grounds is where you’ll also find the Trail Del Salame’s fun medieval themed refreshment point!
“We’ve also incoroporated a stretch of woodland named Prune Stream Woods (Rio Prugna) into the Traill’s race course.” Fabrizio added, “And then the finish line is just a hill away for the 10k race. Whilst the 23k and 36k will take runners up towards the gentle hill ridges between the Val Baganza and Val Parma, with race route passing through the impressive Castle of Torrechiara.”
The Trail del Salame takes place in the hills in Emilia-Romagna, read our guide to the Emilia Romagna region to find out more about this northern region which has the Po Valley lowlands, the hills, the beaches along the Adriatic coast and of course the stunning Apennines.
