Michele Pini & Monica Testa

Runners and bloggers – both in full time jobs – often accompanied on the trails by their three young sons and Snow, an Alaskan Malamute.

Interview by Maria E. Bellini

They live in Salsomaggiore, a historical SPA town in Emilia-Romagna, Italy.
They met at a relay running event, having been put on the same team. Instantly they hit it off and phone numbers were exchanged as well as the baton!

Name: Michele Pini

When do you train?
I try to fit it in at the weekends!

How do you divide the housework?
50% / 50%

Tell us about some of the Trail races you’ve run
Well there are lots! I’ve been running since I was 10. Tor des Géants®, The North Face® Lavaredo Ultra Trail, The Tartufo Ultra SkyMarathon®, Ultrabericus, Via Lattea Trail, The Abbots Way Ultra Trail… to name just a few…

So far, which have been your favourite races?
I wouldn’t say I have one in particular. I take each race for what it is. They’re all different. I try to experience each one for what it is. And however a race goes there’s always something positive to gain from it.

Being a creature of habit… I love to return to the same races. In 2017 I’ll be running my 8th Lavaredo Ultra Trail. And I’ve run all the editions of the Tartufo Trail too… (since 2008)

And your least favourite?
…those ones where you end up going to – but which you never really wanted to run…
So never give up on something that you really, really want….

Who’s the most resilient of the two?
I’d say I am, as I’ve run more longer and technical races…

What’s been your craziest sporting moment?
When I was 14 I cycled all the way to Madonna di Campiglio to follow my friend on his holidays! (roughly 250km…)

What are your bucket-list Italian Trail races?
There aren’t really any specific ones. For me, it’s all about just getting out there and enjoying the Trails…Be it alone, with the family or with our Alaskan Malmute, Snow and keeping up that mojo, everyday!

How about a race abroad?
I wouldn’t mind doing something in Alsaka

What’s your top post-race relaxation?
A beer with the rest of the of the Runners

What’s great about running in Italy?
Italy has some of the finest Trails in the world! In the Alps, Dolomites…on the coast, and through fantastic cities. You can run in some really stunning places, the Cinque TerreMont-Blanc or how about a dawn run up the Tre Cime di Lavaredo?

Any extra Trail interests?
Plenty. Cycling, MTB… Mountaineering. photography, skialp and videomaking.

And I try to update my blog as often as I can!

When do you train?
Help…! Whenever I can manage. As soon as I finish work if I can. It’s on with the shorts and shoes, then I’m off! Sometimes I only manage half an hour. Or I get up when everyone else is still asleep.

How do you divide the housework?
Monica 40% Michele 60%

Tell us about some of the Trail races you’ve run
Verdi Marathon, Milan Marathon, Venice Marathon, 100km Asolo Ultra, 50k UltraK Marathon, EcoValdarda, Quadrifoglio Ultra… and more!

So far, which have been your favourite races?
The Asolo 100k, it was my first 100k. A perfect day, great weather, fab organisation & atmosphere… a tough course – just as I like it! And also Michele who supported me. Without him I wouldn’t have made it.

And your least favourite?
Whilst at really technical part on the course of the Summer Trail del Prosciutto. A narrow ridge along a gully — I felt quite pressed from other runners right behind me…

Who’s the most resilient of the two?
He is…. I’m more stubborn though!

What’s been your craziest sporting moment?
For certain aspects the Asolo 100k — I really had no idea what I was letting myself in for. Oh and the time in 2003 when I ran my first road marathon without any specific training whatsoever…

What are your bucket-list Italian Trail races?
Magredi – Stage race, Milano — San Remo, Novecolli — yes… road races!

How about a race abroad?
Hmm…. none
yet…!

What’s your top post-race relaxation?
…What’s
relaxation?!

What’s great about running in Italy?
Well… there’s no singular reason. I’d say it’s because the whole of Italy is special. Each and every corner has it’s own story to tell….
