Experience The History of Trail!
Now in it’s 15th year, this is one of Italy’s oldest and most well respected Trail Races. Each year on the second Sunday of July several hundred italian and international trail runners hit the trails in the Appennino Reggiano – Reggio-Emilia’s Apennines – and tackle the grueling 42k race route that has runners facing a challenging 2300 metrers of elevation gain.
The race starts form the relaxed village of Busana, with it’s old stone buildings and narrow streets it’s easy to forget that you’re only a couple of hours away from the airports of fashionable Milan or foodie Bologna. Visit our airport guide for travel arrangements to Italy. The Ecomaratona race route is run entirely in the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Reggiano, which, since 2015 has been officially instated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a network of international protected areas. What Makes the Ecomaratona del Ventasso Special
How It All Started
A well loved destination for singe day hikes and walkers. Mount Ventasso’s summit stands tall at 1730 meters, and with an impressive large iron cross, it’s a favorite place amongst hikers to stop and enjoy a packed lunch and contemplate the views.
To one side, the low flat lands of the Po Valley hazily open up to lose themselves in the distance, and to the other side sit the the rugged ridges of the Parma Apennines’ that separate Emilia-Romagna from Tuscany.
Since the 1990’s, Mount Ventasso has been home training ground, or shall we say ‘playground’ to a local group of friends and runners.
And it was here, in late 2002 that the thought of organising a marathon distance race, exclusively on the trails, specifically these trails, came to be.
Trail running, in Italy, at that time, was quite a rarity, confined to the Alps and Dolomites, with just a handful of races. Any intrepid trail runners usually had to travel to France, to participate in races. Therefore the idea of organising a marathon distance trail running race was quite audacious… and it could have remained just an ‘idea’ was it not for the determination and spirit of the local community.
Growing up with the Ventasso
Now in it’s 15th year, with an organising committee and network of over 200 volunteers, that over the years has adapted to the needs and changes that inevitably happen when a race’s life span is as broad as the Ecomaratona del Vnentasso’s has been.
Today the committee is led by the young Race Director Michele Bucci, from Busana. Throughout the years Michele witnessed the whole movement come to life, firsthand. “I’m completely aware that I’ve ‘inherited’ an important event,” He told us. “And I hope to honour it well.”
For the past 3 years The Ventasso Trail Marathon is part of the prestigious Salomon Italy Trail Tour Circuit, which in 2017 includes six of the best Italian Trail Races, Dolomiti Beer Trail, Elba Trail, Le Porte di Pietra, Alpago EcoTrail, Ventasso Trail, and Trail Sellaronda.
