Turn off civilization and enter the wilderness!
Head off to wild Capraia. It’s nearer than you think. Just a short ferry ride from the Tuscan port of Livorno (which merits a visit just to sample it’s delicious fish stew – Cacciucco) and you can be hill-repping on Capraia’s trails in just over two hours. Check out our full Capraia Island Guide to see what this gem of a place offers!
When’s the action taking place?
The Capraia Rock Trail takes place on 25th and 26th of March 2017. And for the organizers: ASD Leopodistica, this will be their first year organizing the Capraia Rock Trail. The previous five editions of the race, under a different organization, followed a slightly shorter route, but has always proved a fantastically popular race and a great chance for a spring trail running break.
How long is it?
Race route is a good 24km long with a not too testing 1400m D+ elevation gain. If you’re just there for some relaxing fun you can run the shorter distance of 14 km. And you can bring the kids too… as the Capraia Rock Trail has a race route specially dedicated to the little ones with a “kids trail” of 2km.
Race route – and….When you mention the word ‘wild’ well…how WILD is wild‘ ?
How long is a piece of string? Capraia is a small island (just 19km squared), and the population density is pretty low. So for central Italy – we’d call it ‘wild’.
Race starts at the harbour and following footpaths climbs up the hills giving you spectacular views over the Tyrrhenian Sea. If it’s a fine day, (and it should be for end of March in Capraia) you’ll be able to see the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and neighboring Corsica!
All this on trails surrounded by wild flowers, maquis, and if you’re lucky you may get a glimpse of some Ibex.
There won’t be many trees as vegetation is knee high – so wear some protection on your head. You’ll be passing by the Ex Penal colony which offers food for thought and some reflection.
Race route is circular, and finishes back down in the harbour after a quick run through the main village.
The Capraia Rock trail, will give you the opportunity to run through a unique location in Italy.
