What could be more enticing than several days in one of Italy’s top wine areas and the possibility of running in a trail race?

We’ve come up with our top six choices, each event also offers several non competitive walk/run distances if you feel like taking it easy… and verging towards the wine aspect.

So don’t forget to pack a corkscrew!

#1 Chianti Ecomaratona

Chianti Ecomarathon – 42km throughout Tuscany’s tumbling hills and Chianti producing vineyards.

The race takes place in Castelnuovo Berardenga, just 15km from lovely Siena, in mid October.
With three competitive distances to choose from: 42 – 21 – 14 all taking runners  through the golden autumn bliss that’s Tuscany, race bibs go really quickly. So be prepared to enter a year a head.

If you want to take things at a more relaxed level, there’s also the two non competitive 10km, and an 8km route that takes walkers through the wineries.

#2 Brunello Crossing

We stay in Tuscany for the Brunello Crossing, that takes place in Montalcino, in the Val d’Orcia in February.

44km, 22km and 13km distances plus a Run Walk & Nordic Walking Event.

Enjoy Tuscany as it wakes up from winter…. and nature explodes into spring. Discover this fertile area where the full-bodied Brunello di Montalcino is produced

#3 Trail del Moscato

The end of September sees the annual Trail del Moscato in Santo Stefano Belbo – with a race route that takes runners and walkers across the vineyards in the world famous Langhe region, in Piemonte’s wine district.

54km, 21km and 10km are the competitive distances, with a kids Fun Run of 2km, Wine and Food Walking event and a nordic walking 21km & 10km.

Nearest Airports: Genoa or Turin.

#4 Sciacche trail

The Sciacche Trail takes place in the beginning of April in the picturesque Cinque Terre – Liguria where the sweet passito Sciacchetrà is produced.
47km, and other distances.

#5 Trail del Prosecco

Try the Trail del Prosecco… and go drink some bubbly prosecco! Italy’s answer to Champagne!

Two distances 18km and 11km, that take place across the hills of Conegliano Veneto at the heart of the Prosecco wine region. Race taes place mid October. This trail also makes a great opportunity to also visit nearby Venice.

Nearest airport: Trieste, Treviso, Verona or Venice.

#6 Ecomaratona del Barbaresco e del Tartufo Bianco di Alba

The grape harvest and food festivals.

Combine full-bodied Barbaresco red wine with white truffles of Alba, add on a Trail race and and you’ll be in food and running heaven!

Set in Piemonte’s famous Langhe region – at the end of October, 42km and  21km – plus a host of other events over the weekend.
