This is part one of two articles looking at trail running in and around the Dolomites this July. Yes! There are that many trail races to choose from, and if you consider that all races have more than one distance on offer…. well trail runners are spoilt for choice!

Choosing the distance

Whether you’re after a brutal 20hr+ ultra trail that will be the focus of your entire ‘holiday’, or a medium distanced trail race to dedicate a couple of days logistics to… or even just a cheeky short trail to spice up your time in Italy, if it’s impressive scenery you’re after – the Italian Dolomites and surrounding mountains offer a good choice of trail running events coming up this July.

How to get there

Set in the northeast Italy, the Dolomites are spread over three Italian regions: VenetoTrentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and are part of the Alps. You can read more about the Dolomites in our introductory article.
Nearest Airports: Fly to Venice, Treviso, Verona, Bergamo or Milan.

What about some hiking?

If you’d like to visit the Dolomites at a more relaxed pace, consider hiking one of the area’s “Alte Vie” – the “High Routes”. These are waymarked long distance hiking routes set in spectacular surroundings, the routes are varied and can present challenges such as Via Ferrata and altitude. For more information on the “High Routes” and other hiking routes you can read the dedicated area on Dolomites Unesco.
